Alan Parker's incredible 1991 film and its music have stood the test of time, and watching it recently, 'The Commitments' still has heart, humor, and so much soul. The cast was plucked from obscurity, with Parker putting musical talent over acting experience. The lead singer, Andrew Strong, was only 16 years old when he landed the role by accident. It was after he sang 'Mustang Sally' for fun during a rehearsal that Parker was convinced he was the perfect fit for the role. Strong's dad was then the vocal trainer for the cast.
The film covered a number of soul classics performed by this brilliant group including 'In the Midnight Hour', 'Try a Little Tenderness', and 'Mustang Sally'. The idea of Irish musicians singing soul is what makes this film so incredible, and the soundtrack went on to sell over 12 million copies. If you haven't seen this film, go see it immediately! Some consider it to be one of Alan Parker's best films to-date.
